The agency has devoted several resources and made many attempts to thwart hopeful thieves. A Canada Post report claimed that more than 647,000 mail receptacles, including street letter boxes and community mailboxes, have been fitted with master locks, and new employees are now receiving security awareness training. Additionally, postal officials are working closely with both private and commercial customers to develop new and innovative security features, such as online change of address notification services and registered mail specifically for sensitive documents.
Canada Post's latest upgrade comes in the form a "bait mail" program designed to not only protect mail but proactively identify postal thieves, according to Global News. The article says the mail agency has yet to reveal how the program works, but early operations have resulted in 39 arrests and more than 300 charges.
