Digital printing set to drive industry into the future
The printing industry has seen significant changes in the past few years. Web-to-print technology integrated itself into the industry and in turn saw powerful growth within the last decade. Digital printing is on course to become an essential element of the printing industry by 2020, according to projections by Printing Industries of America.
The IBISWorld Industry Report on printing in the United States found the demand for digital printing is on the rise due to restricted deadlines and shorter print runs. During 2012, web-to-print only made up 6.6 percent of the market but is set to increase its share of the industry as digital media grows in prominence. The report estimates digital media may take over the printing industry due to improvements in web-to-print technology and increased use of digital printing devices among marketing companies and printers. Advancements may also impact web-to-print workflow over the next five years and result in shorter print runs to reduce marketing budgets and wasted materials.
Digital printing allows marketers to only print what is needed while allowing for additional print runs in the future. According to the report, innovations in web-to-print technology may force printers to consolidate their services while transitioning the focus of the printing industry into the digital sphere. The technology will also help printers cut costs due to the decreased need for warehousing.
The printing industry is set to change in the next decade. Digital printing may become the heart of the market as companies start to turn toward better workflow management systems and lower print budgets. Printers have already started to integrate marketing solutions into their business models, but web-to-print will drive printers to adopt even more changes in the future.
