When importing a .xls file, SmartAddresser 5 says that it is an unknown file format?
The file more than likely contains either formatting that is unique to MS Excel, or multiple worksheets with data. To use the file in SmartAddresser 5, first open it in Excel, then go to the File menu, select Save As and save it as a .csv file. This type of file contains only the text data (in the active worksheet) and can be easily recognized by SmartAddresser 5.

When importing a .dbf file, why is SA5 not retaining any of the field mappings?
This can happen if the file you are importing is a dBASE .dbf file, as opposed to a FoxPro one. The reason for this is that since SmartAddresser 5 is written in Visual FoxPro, it automatically treats all .dbf files as though they are FoxPro tables, not dBASE ones. The best way to deal with this is to go ahead and import the file, then go to the Edit menu, select Fields, then change the field names to the ones you were trying to map to.

How do I process a list that has house numbers in one field and the rest of the address in another?
To import a list with the house numbers in one field, and the rest of the address in another, do the following:
1. When importing the list, map the field with the house numbers to Address, and the one with the rest of the address data to Address2. Do not check the boxes for Optimize, Validate, Find Duplicates or Presort.
2. Once the list is imported go to the Edit menu and select Command.
3. Create and run the following command:
Replace All Address With ALLT(ALLT(Address)+" "+ALLT(Address2))
Replace All Address2 With ""
4. Validate and presort as per usual.

When I validate my list why are all of the records coded as undeliverable?
This generally happens if you either did not map the fields, they were mapped incorrectly, or the file is a dBASE .dbf, and the field mappings are not being retained (see above).

I am trying to select the NCOALink check box on the Validate Records window, but it is grayed out, and says File Exceeds Limit (4) next to it.
This means that the list you are running contains more records than you have left in your NCOALink account. To obtain more records, please contact our sales office at 888.227.7221.

When I validate individual records, many of them come up Successfully Coded – but are not given a Plus 4, CRRT, Delivery Point, etc.
These are records that used to be considered as deliverable under the old CASS rules, but do not pass the new, stricter DPV rules. These are usually addresses that physically exist, but are not listed as registered delivery locations with the USPS.

I am sending mail to almost every address in an area. Why am I not getting Saturation or High Density rates?
To get either Saturation or High Density rates you must have Walk Sequence data for your list, which is usually purchased from a licensed list vendor. Because of the special nature of these lists, they are processed very differently than regular ones.

2. Click the Print Labels button on the Print Presort window.
3. Set the Output Type drop-down on the Print Settings window to Disc File.

When trying to print labels I get an error message that ‘Variable Field Name Does Not Exist’, even though there is no such field on my label template.
This happens when there has been a system variable defined for the template. To resolve it:
1. Click the Edit button to open the Label Designer.
2. Go to the Reports menu, select Variables, and then delete the specific variable from the list of defined variables.

How do I prepare First Class Flats in trays instead of Sacks?
First Class Automation Flats will presort as a packaged based mailing by default. However, if you want to presort as a Tray based mailing, simply enter the Presort Setup window and change the Minimum per Tray to 90.
Having the minimum set to 90 will invoke the tray-based preparation.
